It is not uncommon for a psychologist to answer their own phone especially if he has a small practice. Also it is not unusual to have a small practice in your home. However, it should not be inside his living area. It should be an office with a separate entrance (basement, back of home, garage apartment, etc). Most states require this for zoning. You are within your rights to ask for information regarding his education, licensing, and experience. Most people are nervous when they first see a psychologist or counselor. When you meet with him be honest about your discomfort. He won’t take it personally. It will help open a dialog. If you still feel uneasy about the psychologist after a session or two look for a new therapist. It is important to feel comfortable with your therapist. Good luck.

Ask him for a reference. Call your local medical society and see if he has has any complaints. Go on your states web site to the education dept. From there you can look and see if he has ever had charges of misconduct under the licensed professional list.

If you have doubts don’t go. Remember its you that needs help and is randomly looking for someone to give you answers.

Hey, I went to one and I was depressed and began to cry as I told him my problems, he came around his desk and started to stroke my hair, I thought he was conforting me, wrong, he unzipped his pants and stuck his pennis in my mouth. I never said a word to anyone. I knew he may say I was crazy and cause me alot of trouble. Then I find out his partner, was a convicted fellon for having *** with a patient. So I’ve learned, you can’t trust these people. If your gut tells you theres a problem, listen. Unless you want a hugh law suite, then reconsider !!!

A lot of pyschologists run their practices out of their homes, it might not be bad that he answers his phone too. It’s probably a small practice, where he is in touch with his clients. Judge him on the advice he gives you and your partner. You will know if he is weird, also the way he treats you in his home. As a first precaution do these things- make sure he has a valid medical license, anyone can advertise in the phone book. Also look for referances. There are many websites around that dish about the doctors record and whether he has ever been in trouble. Go with your gut!
